Diamonds are a cars best friend

The Diamond lane is the mirage of the freeway system. They were built to reward drivers with two passengers per car called carpooling.  But 99.% of us travel to and from work by ourselves.  We spent billions of our tax dollars creating these carpool lanes throughout our major metro areas.

Highway 394 in Minneapolis, MN. Note: The middle lanes are the Diamond lanes.

Our solution to under- used diamond lanes

We should allow small (diamond) cars with one passenger that average 30-mpg or more to drive in the diamond lanes.  Currently around 10 percent of the cars would qualify based on the EPA mpg tested cars. By moving the small cars into the diamond lanes, we all get the following benefits:

Other solutions to increase people to purchase cars that average over 30-mpg

It should be noted that not everyone who drives to work has diamond lanes available.  We propose the following extra benefits to small (diamond) car owners:

Why allow all of these benefits to small (diamond) car owners?  If these new small (diamond) cars benefits were enacted you would see small (diamond) cars pass you every day going to and from work. You would see them parked on the street with expired meters, and you would pay every day 10 percent more than the small (diamond) cars. The next time you are looking to purchase a new or used car it could cross your mind to purchase a small (diamond) car.

The following cars would qualify  based on the EPA Web site.  Note: All cars built in the last 20 years which average 30-mpg or more would be allowed to become diamond cars.

How do we make the above solutions a reality?

The only way is to change current local, state, and federal laws. The local and state governments receive tax dollars from the federal government for highway construction and improvements.  If new laws are passed on the above solutions encouraging people to drive and own small (diamond) cars, the cars would have a small diamond sticker on the front passenger side of the windshield and the back driver’s side rear window. The police would have a list of cars that qualify for the diamond stickers to prevent anyone attaching the stickers on a SUV.  Note: This may start as a local or state law change similar to the seatbelt law.
